The Madras High Court has issued a notice for tax evasion to music composer AR Rahman. The notice was issued after the Income Tax Department filed an appeal in the court. According to the appeal, Rahman had allegedly evaded tax in his personal capacity by transferring remuneration of Rs 3.47 crore to his charitable trust. Reportedly, the IT department found discrepancies in Rahman’s tax filing for the year 2011-12.
According to the IT department, Vishal Rashi was his salary to make ringtones for a UK-based telecommunications company called Mobiles. This happened in 2011 and according to their three-year contract, the musician was supposed to create a special ringtone for the company.
The IT department said that the income for the work is to be received in Rahman’s personal account and is taxable. He further said that the amount can be transferred to a charitable trust after the tax cuts.
